Why Maille?

For me, maille is a passion. For you, it’s an opportunity to have a piece of truly unique art. A chain maille inlay isn’t just an image, it’s a creation with texture, vivid color, and the eye-catching shine of polished metal.

FAQs

…Can I touch it?

This is one of the questions I hear the most, and the answer is: absolutely!

Rather than being hands-off like many works of art, a piece of finished maille can put up with a lot of handling. Even after 15+ years, I still love the cool, beaded texture and the oddly light-but-substantial weight of a piece of maille draped over my hands, and I believe you will, too.

How durable is the color?

Very! One of the great things about anodized aluminum, the material I work with, is that the color isn’t just layered over the surface of the metal - it’s as hard to scratch as the metal itself. And, since maille is made of thousands of rings linked together, a lot of things which might scratch a solid sheet of aluminum will instead simply make the rings spin.

I don’t suggest displaying it outdoors or rubbing it against a brick wall, and I do recommend both making sure your hands are fairly clean when you handle it and using quite a bit of caution in cleaning products if the maille does get dirty (many cleaners can damage the color; most maillers swear by Dawn dish soap, and I’d stick with that) but overall, these colors should last for decades.

How do I commission you?

I go over this in more detail on my Custom Work page, but it all starts with contacting me - here on my website, over email, through my Patreon, or through my Instagram or Facebook page. The consultation process is always free, so reach out, send me some pictures or tell me what you’re interested in seeing art of, and I’ll get back to you with a range of ideas and price points!
